Iwooket Condemns the Repression and Extra Judiciary Killings in Wolkait, Raya and Afar
We were hopeful when the new PM of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed acknowledged and condemned the Human Rights Violations in the last 27 Years and promised to promote democracy and rule of law in Ethiopia. Even though some people were sceptical about the practicability of his words many of us preferred to stay patient to see appropriate changes or until an inclusive system is created to lay down the foundations of Democracy and Rule of Law. However, it does not seem that PM Abiy is in full control of the country. TPLF is still defiant and imposing the culture and language of Tigre against the will of the people of Amhara and Afar blatantly. Beyond that TPLF continues its arbitrary killings, torture and persecutions against those who have rejected its illegal actions. The So Called Fedral (Central) Government has done nothing to stop this dangerous Human Rights Violations in the occupied Amhara and Afar lands.
We have been witnessing that TPLF is suppressing the invaded and occupied Amhara areas of Wolkait and Raya. The lawless and arrogant TPLF also extended its suppression and dictation against the people of Afar in the North Eastern part of Ethiopia. Victims of the area people have been reporting to Human Rights Organisations that they have been forced to speak Tigregna and even to sing in the Tigre language by banning their own historic Amharic language.
This kind of backward and disgusting actions against the Amharas and Afars have agonised not only the area people but also the wider Amhara and other peace loving ethnic groups in Ethiopia. The current crisis in Wolkait, Raya and Afara areas are caused by the injustice and shocking Human Rights Violations of TPLF. The people of the Amhara (Wolkait and Raya) have been occupied by TPLF since the collapse of the Military regime in Ethiopia. During the last 27 Year’s occupation of their soil by TPLF the People of Wolkait, Raya, and Afar are intimidated and forced to speak and learn Tigregna, Sing and dance in the Tigre tradition, and administered outside of their Amhara regions.
The people of Wolkait and Raya Amharas made it known again and again that they are “Amharas” and they speak Amharic language. The people of Wolkait and Raya protested against TPLF’s anti Amhara culture, history, sprit and identity campaigns to systematically destroy their values and way of life. People who demanded justice and rejected this barbaric actions are savagely killed, persecuted or forced to learn and speak Tigregna, abandoning their own ancient Amharic language.
If PM Abiy and his government are really concerned about Peace, stability, development and rule of law in Ethiopia TPLF must unconditionally stop its infringement in the land of Amhara and Afar. Unless the forcefully annexed Wokait, Raya and Western Afar areas are returned back to their respective administrative areas and the people are free to speak in their preferred languages and practice the culture and tradition they belong to there will be no peace and stability in the area. These illegal and profane activities of TPLF must be stopped as soon as possible. If not it will put the lovely promised words of PM Abiy Ahmed under question. Iwooket supports the current peaceful demonstration that demands to end the illegal occupation of Amhara and Afar lands and asks the people of Ethiopia to unite against this despicable crime and not to tolerate further rhetoric participation and lawlessness in the country.
The just struggle of Wolkait & Raya Amharas and the people of Afar shall win!
