Ethiopia and Portugal

The relationship between Ethiopia and Portugal is not only one of the Oldest in Human History but also they were the first to create an intercontinental Alliance between Africa and Europe. The Alliance was created in the 16 Century to fight together against Gragn Ahmed (Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi) who had been supported by Ottomans to invade Ethiopia in order to impose the Religion of Islam and to expand their Empire.

Dom Manuel I, the Fortunate, King of Portugal and the Algarves the then leader of Portugal was outraged by the Ottomans invasion and sent his army to Ethiopia led by Christopher Dagama (Son of Vasco Dagam who has discovered india) to strengthen the Army of Ethiopia (King Libenedingl) who was fighting Ahmed Ibn and his supporters of the Ottoman Empire.  After a long and protracted war Christopher Dagama was killed by al-Ghazi but soon the brave Ethiopian and Portuguese armies reorganised and stormed his last fortress and Killed Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi at Woyna Daga, Gondar Ethiopia.

On 26b July 1959 HIM Haile Selassie was Welcomed by the Portuguese President Admiral Americo Thomaz at Cais das Colunas, Lisbon, the Capital City of Portugal
