United Amhara Association UK Condemns AU & IGAD for Endorsing the “Fictitious” Peace Deal

Press Statement

The United Amhara Association in UK, (UAO-UK) strongly condemns the irresponsible and the unsolicited official attendance of the representatives of the African Union Commission (AU), and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), at the recently stage-managed peace deal between the Oromo Prosperity Party led dictatorial Ethiopia regime, and an unknown individual, who is claimed to be the leader of an Amhara Fano organization.

The United Amhara Association is deeply saddened and dismayed by the attendance of the AU and IGAD, representatives at a meeting organised by Abiy Ahmed’s dictatorial regime that has unleashed a genocidal war against the Amhara people, and is trying to misrepresent and cover up its crimes. It is indeed troubling and alarming to see the two regional organisations whose mission is promoting peace, unity and development aligning with a murderous regime waging genocide war against its own people while the world keeps silent. By engaging in such scandalous action, they have compromised their moral obligations, forfeited their professional duty and compromised their institutional responsibilities.

It is a public knowledge that for the last seven years, Abye Ahmed’s regime has unleashed a systematic genocidal war against the Amhara people which is the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. The regime has conducted ferocious attacks against innocent civilians using fatal modern military weapons at its disposal, including drones. The magnitude of the destruction of the war, the depth of the humanitarian catastrophe, and the suffering endured by millions of Amharas is horrendous. By engaging in a systematic gross human rights violations including mass murder, ethnic cleansing, sexual violence and forced disappearances, which is fittingly war crime and crimes against humanity. Over two Million Amharas have been displaced requiring urgent assistance but aid is not reaching them as the result of the regimes denial of access to domestic and international relief agencies. Amharas adhering to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church have been murdered by militia sponsored and armed by the regime, and their Churches have been burnt down. Despite the regimes desperate attempt to hide its genocidal crime from the international community, credible international media outlets such as the BBC, the Guardian News Paper, and Al Jazeera have exposed its criminal disposition.

In the face of genocidal war unleashed against them, the Amhara have been forced to defend themselves by any means at their disposal. The Amhara Fano, an Amhara national resistance movement, is operating in the Amhara region, paying heavy sacrifices in defence of its people from Abiy Ahmed’s marauding army. Fano is fighting back Abiye Ahmed’s murderous army to stop the genocide, and expose the regimes mendacious diplomatic activity to defame the resistance movement by presenting its disguised agents as Fano fighters. The fictitious peace deal that the regime concluded with a Fano leader that surrendered to the regime is part of the regime’s disingenuous activity aimed at misleading the international community by presenting itself as a peace maker. The individual presented as a partner in the “peace deal”, was a member of the Amhara Fano organization, who has been long been removed from the organisation when discovered being an agent in the regime’s pay list.

The United Amhara association in the UK would like to bring to the attention of all concerned that the volatile political situation in Ethiopia deserves a serious attention by the international community. The country is on the verge of total collapse with unforeseen consequence. The solution is not organising pseudo peace meetings, but taking initiatives that lead to genuine dialogue, and brings lasting peace in Amhara region and the rest of the country. In the circumstances, The United Amhara Association in UK calls upon AU and IGAD to:

· Condemn the systematic gross human rights violations, and war crimes against humanity, being perpetrated Abiy Ahmed’s regime is committing against the Amhara in Ethiopia,

· Refrain from becoming an accomplice to Abiy Ahmed’s proto-fascist genocidal regime which is committing gross human rights violations by taking part in a misleading political display that gives a semblance of legitimacy and cover for its ongoing military operation in Amhara region and elsewhere,

· Stop from disseminating misleading information that misinforms the international community for the sake of political expediency,

· Promote an unbiased and principled approach in your mission to resolving disputes as per the objectives and missions enshrined in the charters of the organizations, aimed at addressing the deep-rooted structural problems associated with peace, stability, and unity as well as ethnic violence, corruption and poverty,

The Untied Amhara Association in the UK strongly believes that peace will not prevail in Ethiopia as long as the war mongering Abiye Ahmed regime remains in power. The Amhara people, and the rest of Ethiopians in general, deserve the right to life, freedom and equality. To achieve that goal, an all-inclusive transitional arrangement is an imperative necessity. In the circumstances, it is incumbent upon all peace-loving peoples as well as human rights defender to stand by the side of the Amhara people in particular and the Ethiopian people at large to bring lasting peace where freedom, equality, and justice prevail.
