ትንሽ ስለ ገና/ልደት
ኢትዮጵያ የኢየሱስ ክርስቶስን የልደት በዓል በታላቅ ድምቀት የምታከብረው ታህሳስ ፪፱ (በአራት ዓመት አንዴ ታህሳስ ፪፰) ነው፡፡ እየሱስ ክርስቶስ የተወልደበት ቀን የገና/ልደት በዓል በመባል ይታወቃል፡፡ በአሉ መንፈሳዊ ብቻ ሳይሆን አስደሳች የህብረተሰብ ስርአቶች ይታዩበታል። ገና በመላው ኢትዮጵያ በተለይም በአማራ አካባቢዎች ማራኪ በሆነ ከፍተኛ ደስታና ባህላዊ ስርአት በየአመቱ ይከበራል።
ኢትዮጵያና ሌሎች የኦርቶዶክስ እምነት ተከታዮች የኢትዮጵያን (የጁሊያን) የዘመን አቆጣጠር ተከትለው ሲያከብሩ ኤሮጳዉያን እና አሜሪካዉያን የበግሪጎርይ የተለወጠዉን የዘመን መቁጠሪያ ተከትለው በዲሴምበር ፪፭ ቀን ያከብራሉ። ይሁን እንጅ ይህ ቀን ጌታ የተወለደበት ቀን አለመሆኑ በብዙ ክርስቶያኖች ስምምነት ላይ ተደሮሶአል።

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO CHRISTMAS
Christmas, also called the Feast of the Nativity is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, Celebrated every year on December 25 as a religious and cultural event among Billions of people around the world, mainly in Europe and America. According to Wikipedia the word “ Christmas ” derived from “Mass of Christ,” later shortened to “ Christ-Mass .” The even shorter form “ Xmas ” – first used in Europe in the 1500s – is derived from the Greek alphabet, in which X is the first letter of Christ’s name: Xristos, therefore “ X-Mass .”
Today we know that Christ was not born on the 25th of December but it is a Christian holiday that refers to the birth of Jesus, and a cultural holiday for non-Christians as well. The day known as “Christmas Day” is celebrated on the 25th day of December. It is one of the most important days of the Year for Christians, along with Easter when the death and resurrection of Jesus are celebrated.
This Year (in 2020) the Celebration of Christmas will not be as warm as the previous Years because the pandemic disease called COVID-19. The season of preparing for Christmas is called “Advent” and begins on a Sunday about four weeks before Christmas. There is disagreement among scholars on when Jesus was born. Christians celebrate Jesus’ birthday on December 25. Jesus was not born exactly on December 25th but this date was chosen to coincide with the pagan Roman celebrations honoring Saturnus (Harvest God) and Mithras (Ancient God of Light).
Today Christmas trees are a popular decoration as are sparkling lights in windows and on walls. Many Orthodox Christians annually celebrate Christmas Day on January 6/7 to remember Jesus Christ’s birth, described in the Christian Bible. This date works to the Ethiopian (Julian) calendar that pre-dates the Gregorian calendar, which is commonly observed. Following Pope Gregory’s course correction the Ethiopian and other Orthodox Churches continued to use the original Julian calendar.
Before Christmas, many Christians use the time of Advent to prepare themselves and get ready to celebrate the joy of Christmas. Christians celebrate of the birth of Jesus, who they believe is the Son of God. Advent is normally a period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. In many Orthodox and Eastern Catholics Churches Advent lasts for 40 days, starting on November 15th.
In Orthodox Churches which celebrate Christmas on 6th January, Advent start on 28th November! During Advent many people fast (Ethiopians don’t Eat Animal meat and fat products). The types of food people give up depends on their church tradition and where in the world they live. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church considers January 7th to be the day of Jesus’ birth and is therefore the day is one the four major religious activity in the country. In Amharic Ethiopian Christmas is called “LIDET” or “GENA” and celebrated on 7 January (29th December) throughout Ethiopia.
